Far behind, their tail put down his binoculars and made a swift note on a pad at his belt. Then he slipped away, unseen, to report back. This job was getting more complex than he’d imagined.

Molly arrived back at her house without much incidence, though throughout the journey she managed to convince herself consistently that every shadow contained a murderer. A murderer holding an axe. At one point a cat jumped down from a wall and she almost drop kicked it into the next street. And how could Paul leave her on her own for her walk home? Wasn’t he supposed to be watching and protecting her?

As she turned the corner down her street, she was stopped in her tracks. Somebody was already there. A figure was standing in the shadow behind a streetlight, completely obscured in the dark, just outside of her house. Molly froze. Should she run, or call somebody?

Whoever it was had clearly spotted her. The figure stepped out from the shadows. Dark hair cascaded down over a beautiful dress. Hispanic features set in a scowl. It was Caterina.

Molly, still frozen to the spot, could only watch as the woman marched over towards her. She was wearing a long black dress, and some of the highest heels Molly had seen, making a clipping sound that rang down the empty street as she walked swiftly over. For a moment, Molly thought to run away. “Good evening, Caterina,” said Molly after a couple of moments pause. Still, Caterina said nothing, she simply glared back. Molly struggled to keep her temper down.

The moment stretched. Molly couldn’t stand it any longer.

“Is something wrong?” she said, desperate to get something other than silence out of the woman.

“Is something wrong?” mimicked Caterina, spitting out the last word. “Is something wrong! Of course something is wrong! Everything is wrong!” she threw her arms in the air in frustration.

“Well… can I do something?”

Caterina took a deep breath and re-crossed her arms. Out of the corner of her eye Molly thought she could see a curtain being twitched to one side – some neighbor or other had been startled by Caterina’s outburst.

“There is nothing you can do. I am merely here to try to work out exactly what you have to do with all of this.”

“What I have to do with it?” Molly tried not to sound too nonplussed.

“Yes. You can see my confusion. Two days ago I hear that some woman has turned up to the house asking for money, and set Gerald into a temper. Then
